Our global entry into the registry of object identifiers (OIDs): http://www.oid-info.com/get/1.3.6.1.4.1.8186.7

From that page is a web-archived explanation of how the OID tree is constructed (included below).

Custom OIDs (Object Identifiers) are used to extend the schema for specialized purposes (for which no current standard schema exists).
Any entity may have an "arc", or a portion of the global hierarchy by registering with IANA.
The Computer Science Department at Caltech has 1.3.6.1.4.1.8186.7.
The ".8186." belongs to Caltech, and ".7." was granted from the ITS Department to CS.
Internally to CS, we have branched even further so that SNMP has a branch and LDAP has a separate branch:
1.3.6.1.4.1.8186.7.1 is for LDAP attributes.
1.3.6.1.4.1.8186.7.2 is for LDAP objectclasses.
