Power Outages

Currently, only one rack-size Uninterruptable Power Supply exists. This means that critical components of the infrastructure are kept in one rack, in ANN 1T1, with the UPS.

This also means that all other systems in ANN 1T1 will immediately lose power without warning if utility power supply is lost.

Having said that, we are taking precautions to gracefully shutdown the important systems that are on UPS power with the presumption:
  • the UPS battery will not last until utility power is restored
  • sysadmins will not be able to manually/gracefully shutdown those important systems
The UPS system in use allows software to be installed on each host to monitor the status of the UPS battery, as well as listen on the network for the UPS to message the host to shutdown regardless of battery status.
